Alexander The Great always led the charge and never asked his soldiers to do something that he wouldn’t. At this historic battle in modern day Pakistan, Alexander charged the enemy Malian fortress, ahead of the rest of his army, scaled the wall and jumped into heart of the enemy stronghold with only his three bodyguards by his side. The Mallians, stunned by the sheer audacity of a lone king charging into their midst, hesitated for a second before swarming him. Alexander and his guards fearlessly fought all before them. His bodyguard Abreas was killed almost instantly by an arrow to the face. Alexander was hit by an arrow that pierced his breastplate and lodged in his lung. But Alexander continued the fight. Bleeding out and gasping for air (historical accounts say air and blood were bubbling from the wound), Alexander collapsed. Peucestas stood over him with the Sacred Shield of Troy, while Leonatus guarded the other side. His two remaining guards fought like men possessed, holding off an entire army to protect their fallen king. Outside, the Macedonian army had gone into a “berserker” rage. Believing their king was dead, they didn’t wait for ladders. They drove iron pegs into the mud walls to climb, or stood on each other’s shoulders to reach the top. They swarmed the citadel and, fueled by pure vengeance, spared almost no one inside. Follow @animahistory for more posts.

I had a great time with the Daughters of Penelope Ilion Chapter 135 of Astoria this past Saturday. I gave them a tour of the Greek and Roman Art galleries and we even got to top off the day with the Byzantine exhibit. We went to the Myconian Restaurant after for some delicious food.
